Michigan Nursing License: Lookup, Renewal, CE, and Fees

Michigan is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a registered nurse licensed in another state cannot practice in Michigan on a multistate license. Instead, that nurse must apply for licensure by endorsement through the Michigan board before working in the state, going through Michigan's own application process rather than carrying over privileges from a compact license.

An RN with an active, unencumbered license from another U.S. state or Canada, originally licensed by passing the NCLEX-RN, applies online through MiPLUS for a $212.90 fee. The applicant submits a Nursys verification of the out-of-state license, has official transcripts sent directly from the nursing school, passes a criminal background check, and completes human trafficking identification and implicit bias training. Michigan has no state jurisprudence exam, but applicants must meet an English proficiency requirement; the profile does not state whether a temporary permit is available.

Michigan requires graduation from a nursing program approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing, a CASN-accredited Canadian program, or an accredited out-of-state program. Foreign nursing graduates must show their education was substantially equivalent, have transcripts translated into English, and complete a credentialing service evaluation. All candidates must pass the NCLEX-RN within three years of graduation; Michigan has no state jurisprudence exam. Initial licensure also requires one-time human trafficking identification training and 2 hours of implicit bias training within the five years before licensure is issued.
