Renewal and continuing education in Indiana
Indiana RN licenses renew every two years, with all RNs renewing by October 31 of each odd-numbered year no matter when the license was originally issued. The renewal window opens no later than 90 days before the expiration date. The Indiana State Board of Nursing does not require continuing education hours for RN renewal, and the board does not state what happens to a license that lapses past the deadline.
Renewing an Indiana RN license costs $50, the same fee charged for an initial license. Moving to Indiana: endorsement and temporary permits
Indiana is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, effective since July 1, 2020, which means a nurse already holding a multistate RN license issued by another compact state can practice in Indiana without applying for an Indiana license, while a nurse whose current license is not multistate must apply through endorsement instead.
Endorsement applicants apply online through MyLicense One for a $50 fee. Indiana requires a criminal background check, verification of nursing education through a Certificate of Completion or transcripts, and licensure verification from every other state or territory held, often through Nursys. Nurses who are not U.S. citizens must also submit citizenship or work-authorization documents. A $10 temporary permit, good for 90 days and extendable once by the board, and a $25 multistate license for Indiana residents are both optional add-ons. No separate state law exam is listed.
Education and exam for an RN license in Indiana
Indiana requires graduation from a board-approved nursing program, with the program sending a Certificate of Completion directly to the board; the requirement does not distinguish between ADN, BSN, or diploma programs. Candidates must also pass the NCLEX-RN, registering separately with Pearson VUE and NCSBN for a $200 fee. Graduates of foreign nursing programs need a TruMerit VisaScreen certificate or a NACES credential evaluation, with all documents in English.
