Renewal and continuing education in Ohio
Ohio issues LPN licenses on a two-year cycle, and renewal falls in even-numbered years, with the completed application due by September 15. Renewal requires 24 hours of continuing education, including 1 contact hour on the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and Board rules. A license that is not renewed by September 15 can still be renewed through October 31 with a late fee, but it lapses on November 1 if no action is taken.
Renewing an LPN license costs $65, compared with the $75 fee for an initial license application. Late renewal between September 16 and October 31 adds a $50 fee on top of the standard renewal fee. The renewal fee covers only the license renewal itself; the NCLEX-PN exam and the BCI and FBI fingerprint background check are separate processes tied to initial licensure or endorsement, not to each renewal cycle.

Moving to Ohio: endorsement and temporary permits
Ohio belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, effective January 1, 2023. An LPN who holds a multistate license issued by another compact state can practice in Ohio under that multistate privilege without applying for a new Ohio license. An LPN whose home-state license is not multistate, or whose home state is outside the compact, must apply for licensure by endorsement before practicing in Ohio.
Endorsement applications go through eLicense Ohio for $75. Applicants must verify original licensure by examination as a practical nurse and current valid LPN licensure through their jurisdiction or Nursys, complete a BCI and FBI fingerprint criminal records check, and finish 2 contact hours of Category A continuing education on Ohio nursing law and rules. The board does not describe a separate jurisprudence exam or English test for these applicants. A nonrenewable temporary permit is available, expiring at the earlier of 180 days or licensure.
Education and exam for an LPN license in Ohio
Ohio requires completion of a practical nursing education program approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing, or an equivalent program approved by another jurisdiction recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The board does not state a required program length. After finishing an approved program, candidates must pass the NCLEX-PN exam, the approved licensing examination for practical nurses in Ohio. Ohio does not require a separate state jurisprudence exam.
