In general, here are seven basic medical assistant duties that you should focus on.

1.  You’ll be taking patient histories. This skill is a valuable tool in your job. You’ll want to be accurate and know the questions to ask to encourage your patient to give you full disclosure so that their chart will be up to date and so that the doctors will know exactly what the problem or problems are. The more information the doctor has, the better he or she can treat the problem at hand.

2. Often a patient will have a lot of questions. You’ll need to be able to answer these questions comfortably while helping the patient to schedule appointments without having to refer to the doctor while they are busy with other patients. In time, this will become easier but at first, it may be a bit of a challenge. As you work your job, you’ll understand more and more and become quite good at this aspect of your job.

3. You’ll need to be professional at all times on the telephone. Every phone call is important. What seems like an emergency to a patient may be routine at the clinic but the patient still needs to be treated with respect and professionalism. Never laugh at their condition and always treat them with the highest respect and politeness.

4. Learning to take blood pressure properly is an important aspect of your job. You’ll be trained in how to do so properly and how to chart this information in the patient chart. In time, you’ll be so good at this that the patient can keep talking and you can still take the blood pressure.

5. Injections are also an important factor in this job. If they seem a bit intimidating at first,  remember, everyone had to start somewhere. You’ll learn this in class and practice on such things as oranges. You’ll learn to give flu shots, immunizations, medications and similar things to your patients with comfort and ease.

6. You’ll be required to take accurate messages when taking prescription requests. Whether you’re checking voice mail or simply taking the information down on the phone you’ll need to be accurate and detailed. In time, it will become second nature to you.

7. Coding is a vital aspect of a medical assistants job. You’ll learn how to code the charts and enter the information into the chart accurately. You’ll learn how to write the details down, fill in the service codes, diagnosis codes and the doctors information.

In time, all of these skills will become second nature to you and the more practice you get doing it, the easier it will become for you. These medical assistant duties are the main functions that you will perform on a daily basis.
