EKG Technician Job Description

An EKG technician works with doctors and technologists that specialize in electrocardiogram (EKG) testing of patients. The technician attaches wires and electrodes to a patient’s chest, arms and legs. The EKG technician then monitors the readings, makes sure that the machine is attached correctly and that the machine is working properly. They then record the results of the EKG tests.

An electrocardiogram technician is responsible for operating the machines that are used to record the activity of a patient’s heart. Most EKG technicians are employed in hospitals, private cardiology clinics, and laboratories. Some duties include:

  • Set up and administer the specific EKG tests
  • Oversee EKG test procedures
  • Perform stress tests
  • Administer Holter monitoring tests
  • Provide EKG test data to physicians


EKG Technician Certification

While EKG technician certification is not necessary, many employers will require the completion of a 1 year certification program. You can get your EKG certification from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP). In addition, some insurance companies will not cover a procedure unless the technician is certified. Being a certified electrocardiogram technician opens up a number of opportunities. These include:

Future Job Outlook

The job outlook for EKG techs look very good, as career opportunities for cardiovascular technicians and technologists are projected to grow 29% from 2010 through 2022. This will add an additional 42,700 jobs to the market place. This job growth is significantly higher than for most other professions.

Salary of the EKG Technician

Some variables that might impact your salary include such things as years of experience, facility where you are employed, and of course your geographic location.

The average EKG technician salary is around $50,000 per year and depends largely on whether you are certified or not. The lowest salary is about $27,000 annually while the higher EKG technician salary is just over the $77,00 mark.
